Offices Officially Opens Today

After 3 weeks of preview performances Ethan Coen’s latest theater attempt opens today. A collection of 3 one act plays centering around life in the office. Staring Daniel Abeles, F. Murray Abraham, Brennan Brown, Aya Cash, John Bedford Lloyd, Daniel London, Mary McCann, Joey Slotnick, Greg Stuhr, C.J. Wilson, and Daniel Yelsky. Here are a couple early reviews.

‘Offices’ Limited Engagement Extended, Already

Ethan Coen’s latest off-broadway effort Offices original schedule to play through 5/31 has been extended through 6/7 before it even officially opens. The set of 3 plays started previews on 4/15 and officially opens on 5/7. Tickets can be obtained at ticketcentral.com. More info at atlantictheater.org

Ethan Coen going Off-Broadway, Again

Ethan Coen is returning to the Atlantic Theater Company with a set of three one act plays entitled Offices directed by Neil Pepe. Each takes place in the workplace and is focused on white collar workers. Peer Review, Homeland Security, and Struggle Season are the one acts. Described as comedies Ethan warned “the audience will be the judge of that.” Inspiration for the theme comes from Ethan’s only job post-college as a typist in an office. I guess he doesn’t consider being an award winning screenwriter, producer, director, author, poet, playwright a job. Does this guy sleep?

This is Ethan’s second foray as a playwright. Almost An Evening, also directed by Pepe, premiered at the same theater before transferring to another after its extended engagement sold out. Almost An Evening saw its final performance July 1, 2008. A book with this trio of plays will be released on April 7, 2009. You can order it here Almost an Evening.

Offices will run from April 15 – May 31, 2009 at the Linda Gross Theater in New York.

Romance and Cigarettes UK Release Date

John Turtorro’s Coen produced “Romance and Cigarettes” is set to hit the big screen in the UK on March 24th. No word on Icon Entertainment or IMDB.com on what the release date is for the US. Here’s the official from synopsis from Icon Entertaiment.

Directed by John Turturro (ILLUMINATA), executive produced by The Coen Brothers (THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?, FARGO) and produced by John Penotti (IN THE BEDROOM, SWIMFAN, ILLUMINATA).

ROMANCE & CIGARETTES is the new project from actor, writer and director JOHN TURTURRO. Set in contemporary America, ROMANCE & CIGARETTES is a modern day musical, a dark and passionate comedy which tells the story of one man’s journey into infidelity and redemption. It stars JAMES GANDOLFINI as our hero Nick Murder and revolves around the repercussions of his adultery and doomed fascination with the flame haired seductress Tula (KATE WINSLET). For Kitty (SUSAN SARANDON), Nick’s long suffering wife, his treachery is the final straw. With faith in her husband shattered she surprises even herself with the ferocity of her anger as she struggles to cope with his betrayal. It is only through a tragic twist of fate that Nick finally understands the extent of the pain he has inflicted on his family. With time running out he discovers the essential value of Kitty’s love and respect.

In ROMANCE & CIGARETTES Turturro has crafted a gritty, exhilarating and intense script. He describes the film as a savage musical. “When the characters can no longer express themselves in words, they break into song, lip-synching the tunes that are lodged in their subconscious. It is their way to escape the reality of their world: to dream, to remember, to connect to another human being” says Turturro. The film combines sharp snappy dialogue worthy of David Mamet at his most brilliant with the visual flare and exquisite originality of the Coen Brothers.

Paris, je t’aime Updated

Just trying to hash out some new information on Paris, je t’aime that I didn’t cover in the original post. It appears that the 20 individual segments take place in each one of Paris’ 20 districts. The segments are all connected by a recurring character in each played by Emilie Ohana.

Here’s the official word from the producers. Enjoy…

Paris, je t’aime is about the plurality of cinema in one mythic location: Paris, the City of Love. Twenty filmmakers will bring their own personal touch, underlining the wide variety of styles, genres, encounters and the various atmospheres and lifestyles that prevail in the neighborhoods of Paris. Each director has been given five minutes of freedom, and we, as producers, carry the responsibility of weaving a single narrative unit out of those twenty moments. The 20 films will not appear in the order of the arrondissements, from one to twenty, but rather, in a pertinent narrative order, initially unknown to the audience. They will be fused together by transitional interstitial sequences, and also via the introduction and epilogue sequences of the feature film. Each transition will begin with the last shot of the previous film and will end with the first shot of the following film, and will have a threefold function: 1) The first is to extend the enchantment and the emotion of the previous segment, 2) The second is to prepare the audience for the surprise of the next segment, and 3) The third is to provide a general, comfortable and cohesive atmosphere to the feature film. The delightful and brief interludes of these transitions will enable the viewer to slide from one world to the next, featuring a recurring and unexpected character. This mysterious character is a witness to the Parisian life and helps create a continuous narration. It appears both in and in-between the films. In addition to the information these transitions will provide about the city and its people, their tone will be intentionally light often referring to famous scenes easily attributed to the history of Paris cinema. Similar specifications will be followed by the composer who will supervise the musical fusion between the films and the transitions as he creates the musical score of Paris, je t’aime. Considering the common theme of Paris and Love, the fusion between the films and the transitions, the fast pace of a fluid and complete storytelling, Paris, je t’aime will not be just another “anthology” picture. It will be a unique collective feature film that will constitute a two-hour cinematographic spectacle whose original structure will make for a dramatically different experience for its global audience.
